Description: ARTIST: Herman Funch is a well-listed Danish artist, whose works have been offered at auctions multiple times and who was an exhibitor at the famous Charlottenborg. Funch was a student of HW Bissen, a famous Danish Golden Age sculptor, and started out both painting and sculpting, but from 1879 onwards, he dedicated his career to painting. He specialized in animal portraits, but also painted landscapes and houses. PAINTING: Pastel on paper. The pastel is a powerful rendering of 3 hooded crows gathering in a blizzard. 2 are already on the ground whilst a 3rd is flying in. The hooded crow is a very common bird in Denmark and can be seen in almost all habitats. As is typical for members of the corvus genus, hooded crows are very opportunistic and intelligent and are sometimes referred to as the vultures of the north. The pastel is dated to 1913. Signed: “HFunch” in the lower left corner. SIZE: With frame: 48 cm/18.9" * 38 cm/15". Without frame: 39 cm/15.4" * 29 cm/11.4". CONDITION: The pastel is in great ready-to-hang condition - no holes, tears or missing color. The frame has scratches and stains.
