Description: We are pleased to offer a beautiful antique stoneware milk pitcher, finished in brown Albany Slip glaze. It has an unusually graceful form and is incised around the rim and the body. The glaze is even and has a matte finish to it; there are a couple of fingerprints around the bottom rim. Pottery makers across upstate New York turned out millions of pieces of utilitarian stoneware in the 19th century. It was not considered valuable and as such, was not preserved or well cared for. Much of it was finished in a dark brown glaze called Albany Slip. The glaze was high in mineral content which accounts for the variations in color - it can be almost black to lighter shades of brown. The firing process caused color variations as well. Many of the pieces show the fingerprints of the potter who dipped the piece into the glaze before firing. Condition: Overall very good. There are a few minor chips around the rim. Size: 7 1/4" tall; 4" diameter at the opening and 4" diameter at the base.
