Description: 'ROMANCE NUEVO.'A romancero dedicated to Saint Anthony of Padua who is shown holding the Christ child flanked by a gentleman and lady. A romancero is a collection of Spanish romances, a type of folk ballad (sung narrative). The romancero is the entire corpus of such ballads. As a distinct body of literature they borrow themes such as war, honour, aristocracy and heroism from epic poetry, especially the medieval cantar de gesta and chivalric romance, and they often have a pretense of historicity. Made by an anonymous engraver/artist. Medium: Woodblock on hand laid (verge) paper. Sheet size: 15.5 x 21 cm (6.1 x 8.27 inch). Condition: good, given age. With heavy soiling, foxing and irregular paper edges. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.
