TRANSLATED FROM FRENCH WIKI: Lortet is one of the best landscape painters. He looks for large expanses of landscape, fine detail and powerful overall effects. He excels at rendering its imposing cosmic effect. He seeks his models everywhere: in Switzerland, in the south of France and in Italy. He was also nicknamed in his early days "the tourist of the landscape". His major qualities are the accuracy he applies in the color and the patience of the brush. "No one has been able to render the majesty of the summits that the evening ray heats with a pink kiss; no one can slide a stream under the mosses better; its fir trees entangle their fragrant needles in a deep clutter." A worthy pupil of Calame, he also excels in the effects mainly of water, mist, light effects and trompe-l'oeil, giving a certain realism to his works. He is moreover sensitive to George Sand's sentence "the smallest drop of water is a reflection of infinity" and strives to apply this formula in his paintings. The spectator forgets that he is facing a simple imitation of nature, and believes that he is really transported, by the magic of art. "The influence of his naturalist ancestors and his scientific education is felt in the realism of his works, but by representing nature in its exact and meticulous truth, he knew, as a disciple of Rousseau to penetrate the intimate feeling". These works are varied, ranging from high poetry to strict realism, it brings a lot of contrast of shadow and light. He exhibited at the Salon de Lyon from 1857. In 1967, after the drama of the first ascent of the Matterhorn (July 14, 1865) guided by Edward Whymper, he sent the famous silhouette of Matterhorn to the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Lyon . His shipments of paintings to this museum are numerous (eight numbers in 1860) always landscapes, and often large. He exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1859 to 1870. His 1862 exhibition testifies to his stay on the Côte d'Azur. Works in public collections: --- Lyon, museum of fine arts: La Grande Meije, oil on canvas (inv.
