Description: Up for bid is an early English aneroid barometer / altimeter by James Joseph Hicks in its original case. The case is 2 5/8 inches long by 2 ¼ inches wide and 1 1/8 inch thick. It has a red sharkskin(?) surface with thin leather edges, a hidden push-button clasp, and a white satin and purple velvet lined interior. The barometer itself is 1 7/8 inches in diameter, gilt brass with a silvered dial. The dial is marked “Compensated” and “J.J. HICKS / LONDON ENG.”. There is some sort of yellow number written on the top of the case. Condition on the piece is fairly good. The face has darkened, and there is a long scratch on the lower left of the dial. The case is in decent shape, though the catch and hinge areas have some losses and it gaps a bit as shown. Still a fine antique instrument!
