Description: Antique Japanese Imari Fukagawa Koransha Footed Bowl - Meiji Period - c.1880. This is a fantastic piece of early Koransha, decorated in the "3 friends" motif (Pine Tree, Plum Tree, Bamboo). The brushwork is of the highest quality and the trees in the 2 main reserves are powerfully executed. The waves breaking on the shore by the pine tree remind me of the famous woodblock "The Great Wave off Kanagawa" c1831. The whole scene is a picture of resiliance against the elements. The plumb tree is also simple, yet powerful.....the delicate plumb blossoms contrasted against the knarled tree trunk. The rim of the piece is pierced with leaf designs; echoing the bamboo leaves that are painted throughout the orange rim and yellow ground. This adds textural interest to the piece. There is a nicely decorated tapestry section that is a complex contrast to the more simple reserves. The entire piece has gold detailing throughout. The base has 4 stylized step-design feet. The rear brushwork includes bamboo leaves connected with scrolling gold tendrils. The mark on the bottom matches one of the examples on the Gotheborg site which states: Mark: Nichi Hi Yama Fukagawa tsukuru, late 19th century. This mark was used by Koransha before the company divided and Fukagawa Seiji was established in 1894. The three characters on the right hand side read Nichi, Hi, Yama from top to bottom. Nichi refers to Nippon (Japan). Hirefers to Hizen (Present day Saga Prefecture). Yama refers to Arita Sarayama (the location of the kiln). The characters on the left read Fukagawa tsukuru which means "made by Fukagawa". On top of the maker's mark is the iconic red scented orchid logo that was used between 1875 and 1894. Overall condition of this piece is excellent. There are no chips, cracks or restorations. There is slight gold wear on the rim and 2 very small spots of yellow ground loss - one under the pine tree in photo 8 and one at the base of the rim (11th photo). The piece has very minimal use and has likely spent most of its life in a cabinet. The dimensions are: Length = 10.0" Width = 10.0". Height = 3.0" This is a rare opportunity to purchase a very high quality early Koransha piece....skillfully executed, beautifully maintained, unique in its form and color profile. This would make a stunning addition to any collection of Meiji period porcelain. Additional photos upon request.
