Description: Antique Hand Carved Wood Shoe-shaped Snuff Box Marked MARKEN-From The Netherlands For Your Old Small Figural Box or Snuffbox Collection-MarkenShoe1 Details Description: An old snuffbox or snuff box made of wood in the form of a shoe. The box is hand carved and hand decorated and has a swinging lid. The lid, on top, is attached to the show with a single screw and swings around it. The box is in the form of a clog, common in Holland or The Netherlands, with a pointed front and a medium height heel. The exterior of the box is decorated with carved geometric design and has the word "MARKEN" varved across the top. The exterior of the box is smoothed, lacquered, and is a dark brown while the interior is unfinished. This was a tourist souvenir sold in Holland and we believe this box is of the 1920s-1930s. Please carefully review the photos presented as they are part and parcel of our description. Date: Uncertain, but most likely 1920s-1930s. Origin: The Netherlands. Size: The box measures ~4 1/2" long, ~1 3/8" wide, and is ~1 3/4" at its highest. The piece itself weighs about 1.5 ounces. Maker: MARKEN Wooden Shoe Factory. Marks: On top the carved word "MARKEN". Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: An old and interesting piece with a common design that is nicely decorated and well done. Condition: The box is in very good condition with no major problems. The lid closes well and swings correctly as it is supposed to. It does have some minor scratches and a few minor dings. The inside is generally clean and shows no damage, beyond a small spot of manufacturing defect. The box shows minor wear and soiling resulting in the nice dark brown patina observed in the photos.
