Description: This lovely peg limbed turned wood doll was sometimes called a "Dutch" doll but originated in the Grodnertal area of Germany - hence Deutsch! She is made from a piece of turned and carved wood for her head and body and she probably still has the mark on the top of her flat head where she was affixed to the lathe for turning. Her head and shoulders are covered in gesso which has been painted to show her black hair with grey fringe, blue eyes with black detail and a tiny painted red mouth, and a skin-coloured face, neck and shoulders. Her arms and legs are peg-jointed which allows movement to her shoulders, elbows, legs, and knees and the lower parts of her arms and legs are also painted. She has been beautifully dressed by a former owner with cotton lace-trimmed underwear, cotton lace trimmed skirt and bodice with purple bodice, puff sleeves and matching bonnet and ribbons. She even has white kid gloves. She has a surface crack to the gesso on her face. She measures 29cm (11.5") tall.
