Description: Antique French Choisy-le-Roi Porcelain Plate, Signed and Numbered, “L’Epargne” (Thrift) Series, 19th century This antique French porcelain plate bears the embossed mark "F6", signifying the date of manufacture, the embossed hallmark “HB & Cie. Choisy” and the impressed hallmark “Médaille d’Or. H.B. & Cie. Choisy-le-Roi”, all marks used by the Faïenceries de Choisy-le-Roi in the last quarter of the 19th century. The Faïenceries de Choisy-le-Roi, founded in 1804 in Choisy, near Paris, were bought in 1863 by Hippolyte Boulanger who gave his initials, “HB”, to the company’s mark. Boulanger enlarged the workshops, greatly increased production and twenty five years later moved the headquarters to the rue de Paradis in Paris. He employed professional illustrators for his printed faience, especially for the very fashionable series of “talking plates” (“assiettes parlantes”) he produced. This particular plate is part of a series entitled “L’Epargne”, or “Thrift”, promoting the saving of money and the values of family and honest work, in opposition to another series titled, “Le Cabaret”, illustrating the ravages of alcoholism on a family. (please refer to our other listings, we have six plates from the séries “Le Cabaret”). These two pedagogical series, “L’Epargne” et “Le Cabaret”, were produced during the last third of the nineteenth century when alcoholism had reached epidemic proportions in France, leading industrialists like Hippolyte Boulenger to establish credit unions and charitable associations favoring his employees. The borders around the edges of these plates show symbols of thrift on one side - squirrels, beehives and tools - and playing cards, dice, wine and absinthe, on the other. The center of the plate is decorated in grisaille with the image of a family at dinner in the garden with the title, “L’Epargne”, above, and underneath, the description, “Voilà notre maison payée, nous la laisserons à nos enfants” (Our house is paid for, we can leave it to our children). This plate is in good condition with the exception of some yellowing on the back. This charming plate will bring a bit of 19th century French into your decor and would be an excellent addition to your collection.
