Description: Buck Rogers’s "XZ-31 Rocket Pistol" was the very first toy ray gun ever produced. Daisy released the toy at Macy’s department store for the 1934 Christmas season. To promote the gun, Macy’s created a "World of Tomorrow" section in their New York store, complete with rockets, moonscapes, and employees dressed like space travelers. The day the toy went on sale, lines stretched around the block. This model was made by Daisy in their plant in Plymouth, Michigan. It appears to be made out of stamped steel, with a few chrome pieces. This piece is in fair condition. Aesthetically it remains in tact, but the mechanism seems to be jammed. At some point in the past, someone attempted to repair it, placing a screw through a piece that would have been held by a bent metal clip that likely broke off. See photos for details of condition issues. The steel itself is darkened due to corrosion, when released it would have been polished just like the chrome tip and ring on barrel, but this item is nearly 90 years old and has patina appropriate for its age. No major rust or missing components, nothing rattles inside. I have a feeling a skilled toy repair person could make this function again, but it is still just as cool without it (where do you even buy caps for these things anymore?).
