Description: This antique Chinese Export work box is a stunning piece that will be a treasured addition to any room. It has a domed rectangular shape with canted edges, raised on carved bat and claw feet. The box is made of lacquered wood with black background and gold painted cartouche scenes of Chinese people in romantic gardens, flowers, moths and leaves, and including scrolls and ink pots on the rim of the box top. In addition to its lift top, it has brass handles, brass keyhole escutcheons, an exterior drawer (divided into 4 sections) and a key that works both the drawer and lift top, making it perfect for storing any type of treasure! The box is handmade and features intricate details that showcase the rich culture of China. Made circa 1850, likely for the English market. This is the best period for workboxes in this material. Each box represents countless hours of skilled work. A possible maker or craftsman mark can be found on the back of the drawer when pulled out and examined. The box measures approximately 14 inches long by 10.25 inches deep and 6.5 inches tall. The item(s) are antique and sold as is/as found. The item(s) may show wear, fading, scratches, repairs, restoration, original imperfections and/or damage from normal use. Note generally wear to painting, particularly on top, on exterior drawer edge and one of the back panels as shown in photos. Additionally, photos of underside show gluing and other repair to feet.
