Description: A beautiful little mould blown antique glass Victorian inkwell or ink bottle. This one has a square form with fluted ribbed sides. It's very clean considering his age, and the glass is clear with a definite blue tinge.Up until 1700 writing ink was only available in block or powder, from around 1840 liquid ink began to be available for sale, this coincided with the new British penny post, and caused a huge increase in letter writing, to cater for this new demand small bottles, or penny ink bottles as they were known, had to be made in huge numbers, very cheaply. They were hand blown into a two-part metal mould, and simply burst off the blow pipe to finish, the sharp top, known as a “burst lip,” would simply have been corked and sealed with wax.Occasionally, you come across an ink bottle with swirls of other colors within the glass, this was caused by a cross contamination between batches and is another example of how these bottles were made with little thought to quality control, after all, they were designed to be thrown away after use. This example is approximately 1.75 inches wide and 2 inches tall.A lovely example of these cute collectible antique ink bottlesI aim to get your items to you as quickly as I can.
