Description: We are pleased to offer a beautiful antique stoneware tobacco humidor, finished in dark brown Albany Slip glaze. This is a rare form in this medium. The top has an extended inner rim to keep moisture in so that the tobacco stays fresh. There are 3 incised rings near the top of the jar. Pottery makers across upstate New York turned out millions of pieces of utilitarian stoneware in the 19th century. It was not considered valuable and as such, was not preserved or well cared for. Much of it was finished in a dark brown glaze called Albany Slip. The glaze was high in mineral content which accounts for the variations in color - it can be almost black to lighter shades of brown. The firing process caused color variations as well. Many of the pieces show the fingerprints of the pottery who dipped the piece into the glaze before firing. Condition: Overall very good. There is some chipping as seen in the photos. Size: The jar is 4 3/4" tall; 5 3/4" diameter.
