Description: Antique 1800s 19th Century French Wooden Wash-Bat Laundry "Beetle" Carved Primitive Tool, RARE. These hand carved wash-bats, also known as "beetles" were a common tool used on the river to beat out stains from garments, then afterwards for smoothing clothes once dry. Before these tools, women stamped their bare feet or slapped their hands on the fabric to loosen dirt. Later as water became more home accessible, the more efficient washboards were invented with a ridged-metal on a wooden frame. Wash-bats or laundry-bats are definitely hard to come by, this pair originates from France. Incredibly rare, primitive condition shows these are showing some normal wear as expected with usage, also has a few small worm holes due to extreme age. They were purchased from a wonderful estate sale of a French antique shop owner, filled with amazing European treasures. Adds a great touch of French country, farmhouse, shabby chic to any decor, or simply be proud to add these rare tools to any antique collection.
