Description: Description: A set of Grand Tour/Tour of Europe/European vacation photo albums from a local estate here in the Philadelphia area. Each volume is uniformly bound in quarter black leather with leather tips and green cloth. Endpapers are marbled, and each page is attached to a parchment hinge, so the bindings are still solid. The albums seem to document two trips to Europe around 1905. The shorter one is covered in the album labeled 1905 CURRAN on the spine, the longer trip fills the remaining four volumes. The photos are arranged geographically, but I haven't yet worked out what the order of the volumes is. Each photo is labeled with a hand-typed caption in the lower margin. On the whole, the photos are of excellent quality, but there are enough badly-framed or out of focus shots printed to make it clear these were the work of an amateur photographer who (fortunately for us) didn't edit themselves. These came from an estate sale at Chestnutwood, one of the few surviving Delaware River mansions along the west bank of the river. The estate, located off Tennis Ave in Bensalem, was constructed by Dr George Fox in the mid-19th c and remained in his family after his death in 1886. I suspect these albums came from some of his descendants; the same group of people show up throughout the albums, and the gentleman who is clearly the head of the group has a close resemblance to Dr Fox, and may be his son, George Fox, Jr. I haven't yet done a total count, but the smallest volume has 85 prints in it, so there are something over 500 prints in these five volumes. Wear to the bindings, especially to the leather at the corners, some surface cracking to leather on spines. Shipping weight is 12.0 lbs.
