Description: I am unable to find anything online about a "Gleaner's Day" in Cheboygan or otherwise. My best guess is that this is a photo of a "Day" associated with the, Ancient Order of Gleaners. Here is a brief overview of them found online: "The Gleaners was founded in 1894 in Cairo, Michigan, as a fraternal insurance society for men and women over 16 "of good moral character, who furnish satisfactory evidence of insurability" and who "believe in the existence of a Supreme Being, the Creator and Preserver of the Universe." When the order was first organized, it admitted only persons who were actively engaged in farming, gardening, and related occupations or small-town (up to 3,000 people) residents. These restrictions no longer apply. There were 43,000 members in what is now the Gleaner Life Insurance Society in 1994, ten years later the society boasts a record high membership of 77,300 members in sixty-one active arbors (lodges)." This photo identifies a celebration in Michigan, where The Gleaners, were founded. The backdrop is a farm, and there does appear to be a particular dress in the kneeling men that might be typical of a fraternal organization. So that's my best guess. The photo was taken by Johnson Studio in Cheboygan, MI, as noted by an embossed caption lower right corner of the photo. There is a small chip lower left corner, a small crease left side of photo. There are no markings on back of the photo. RARE AND UNUSUAL! EPH3
