Description: This is an Antique 1895 English Hallmarked 36g Albert Watch Chain. At the time of the original listing, we are in the process of listing a large number of antique and vintage items purchased in England. These items are an eclectic mix including gold and sterling jewelry, and many unique, and in some cases, one of a kind items, in wood, brass, and iron, and other materials as well. At that time, we had a variety of other antique Mauchline ware listings, all purchased on the most recent, or on prior trips to England. Among the items from our latest trip are four sterling Albert chains, three singles and one double, and three of which are hallmarked with the fourth marked .925."This type of chain with attachment hooks at each end, and a "T-bar" at the centre, was named after Prince Albert, the husband of Queen Victoria of England". The total length is about 12 1/2". The weight is 36.7 grams as seen on our jewelry scale, and the chain has a nice heavy feel. The clasp on one of the two chains has the same date letter and maker's mark and date letter as the bar on the fob so I assume they were originally made together. The other clasp has a different maker's mark and date letter so I assume it could have been added later. Despite all of the hallmarks, none of the constituent parts has the town / assay mark, but I believe that based on the two maker's marks and the font and cartouche style of the date letter that all of the parts are uniquely identified as having been made in Birmingham. I do not know why there is no town mark. The bar, and both clasps, each have the maker's mark, silver purity mark, and date letter. The ring attached to the ring on the bar has the silver purity mark only. The marks on the bar and the original clasp are: Makers Mark - "J S «" in a rectangular cartouche. I was not able to find and attribution for this maker. Town/ Assay Mark - not present, based on the font and cartouche style of capital M date letter with serifs, I am pretty confident the letter is from hallmarking in Chester. Silver purity mark - The lion passant indicating sterling silver purity Date letter - upper case M in the font style and cartouche style for Chester, Cycle X, 1895. In addition to marks on the bar, each link on the chain has varying hallmarks. Each link has, at a minimum, the Lion Passant sterling silver purity mark. Some of the links also have the maker's mark and some have the date letter in addition to the Lion Passant. The clasp is marked "S.S". Condition The Albert chain is overall in very good condition. Although there are varying amounts of wear on the hallmarks, all can be clearly read with a loupe. There are minor signs of normal handling and use over a period of years that can be seen in the extreme closeup photos, that I am confident you will find not noticeable when examining the chain in a normal manner.. We will guarantee your satisfaction with the condition, as well as your overall satisfaction with your purchase of the wonderful old piece.
