Description: The 1880s saw a fad of "Highland dress" for young boys which was an imitation of the Scottish kilt, among the higher classes. The Aesthetic movement also exercised influence on boy's fashion in the later 1880s. The "Little Lord Fauntleroy" suit began to gain popularity in 1886. It consisted of a velvet top, knickerbockers, flounced shirt & a wide lace colllar. This antique 1880s boys dress is a stunning addition to any antique/vintage clothing collection. The rust velvet jacket has an attached front of a wool plaid vest, creating a Victorian look. The outfit is complemented by a plaid skirt made of the same material as the vest front. The dress is handmade and has a chest size of 24", a waist size of 28", and a shoulder to shoulder measurement of 10". The outfit was meant for everyday wear and the style was suitable for toddlers and preschoolers. Boys did not wear pants until they were about 5 years of age in the 1880s. The antique brown leather shoes complete the look, with 6 buttons on each shoe. This is an original piece from the United States and is perfect for collectors of vintage children's clothing. The outfit with the shoes were purchased together at an antique show. The coat has a wool plaid vest attached to the side seams (front half of a vest) which buttons down the front. A total of 8 buttons.Skirt needs new waist band. I think originally it must have attached to some type of undershirt because there are the remains of four button hole in the waist band. The waist band has had quite a bit of repair to it, but the material has melted with age. I used stick pins to hold the skirt up and actually folded it in the back because the manikin I used was pretty thin. Great antique piece. Skirt has some areas that would benefit being dry cleaned. Last picture shows them. This is probably 140 years old.
