IT IS IN PERFECT CONDITION WITH A COUPLE OF HONEST IN-MANUFACTURING ISSUES (SEE PHOTOS) BUT NO SIGNIFICANT POST-MANUFACTURING DAMAGE. IT APPEARS TO BE A VERY EARLY (1844 - 1850) BOTTLE BASED ON ITS FORM AND DARK GLAZE AND IS STUNNING. IT IS APPROXIMATELY 9 1/2 " IN HEIGHT AND 4" ACROSS THE BASE. IT WEIGHS 2 LBS, 6.8 OUNCES. The later stoneware bottles had a whiter and glossier glaze, with black transfer lettering applied. Grumman also sold their product in glass bottles . A Norwalk history page mentions the following, H. J. & G. S. Grumman, 41 Main Street. Opened in 1844. Opened in a new location in 1870 at 55 Main Street by Sylvester Grumman. Succeeded by the last location in 1882. Manufacturers of all kinds of carbonated beverages. The firm's specialty wa s " The Olden Time Root Beer", which had been continually on the market from its inception in 1855. The recipe for making the root beer was handed down from the grandfather to the owners/grandchildren and still produced with the same recipe in 1901.
