ANNA NEAGLE - TYPED LETTER SIGNED 03/17/1943 - HFSID 155219 ANNA NEAGLE She signs a typed letter discussing King George's assistance in the filming of Sixty Glorious Years at the royal castles. Typed Letter signed: "Anna Neagle", 2 pages (front and verso), 4½x7. Denham Studios, Denham, Uxbridge (England), 1943 March 17. On personal letterhead to Captain T. S. Paterson, Birkdale. In full: "How extremely kind of you and Mrs Paterson to offer to weave a scarf for my other brother. As he is stationed at Port Sudan I'm afraid it would not be of the same use to him as to my brother Stuart and I'm also conscious that it might go astray on that long journey to the East. I will write to my brother and tell him of your kind offer and if he should be transferred to a cooler part of the world I'm sure he will much appreciate your gesture. I wrote to my sister-in-law, telling her of the lovely scarf you have woven Stuart, and she asked me to convey her thanks. I am making enquiries about sending this but to him because I would like him to have it and use it, whereas if it remains here it may be months before he is sent to England, if at all. I was interested to hear that Queen Elizabeth had accepted the Balmoral tartan scarf. The King was most gracious during the making of '60 Glorious Years' and permitted us to film at Balmoral Palace, Windsor Castle and Balmoral Castle. The only permission he would not give was for me to have a dress in the Balmoral tartan as he said this was such a personal matter in the Royal Family, so I wore a Royal Stuart. We used the actual Pipers up at the Castle and they all wore the Balmoral tartan, which I thought most beautiful. I do hope that you have been able to trace the original scarf you sent me. Thank you both again for your extreme kindness. Sincerely yours". Anna Neagle (1904-1986) moved from dance roles to acting in the theatre and then onto movie screens. Extremely popular in her native England, Neagle's early films were all directed by Herbert Wilcox, whom she married in 1943. Neagle specialized in light comedies, but could play roles as diverse as Queen Victoria and Peter Pan. She became a Dame of the British Empire in 1970. Sixty Glorious Years (1938), Neagle's film portrayal of Queen Victoria's life, was directed by her future husband, Wilcox. The royals mentioned in this letter are King George V and his spouse, Queen Elizabeth, mother of Queen Elizabeth II. Mounting adhesive remnants at left edge of first page. Otherwise, fine condition.
