Description: BOTELLO ANGEL BOTELLO BARROS Produced for GALERIA BOTELLO ENGLISH EDITION with the text in English rather than Spanish Hardcover with original dustjacket Art & Sculpture / Oversize Coffee Table Book / Artist Collection & Retrospective Copyright 1988 224 pages FROM THE DUSTJACKET: This volume contains the first comprehensive collection of paintings, drawings, lithographs, and sculptures of Angel Botello Barros. Exiled from Spain following the Civil War, Angel Botello came to adopt Haiti and Puerto Rico as his spiritual homes. The people, colors, shapes, the very essence of the Haitian and Hispanic Caribbean ambience provided the inspiration that, combined with a passionate curiosity and prolific effort, formed his esthetic vision. Botello left behind more than a rich collection of art. He gave to each of his adopted homes an energetic presence that encouraged and promoted the plastic arts in all its forms. The book also provides a retrospective of the artist’s life, written from the point of view of his close friend, Jose del Castilo, and members of his family, illustrated with the artist’s own drawings and photographs. More than 90 full color photographs illustrate the brief commentary on his art, following the progress of his style from his earliest European paintings, through the period characterized by the press as the ‘Caribbean Gauguin’ to the unique ‘Botellian’ imagery by which he came to be identified. The biographical text for Botello was written by Jose del Castillo, Ph.D, best known for his contributions to scientific knowledge in the fields of neurology and pharmacology. A native of Salamanca, Spain, Dr. Del Castillo has lived in Puerto Rico for the past 30 years, where he was a professor at the University of Puerto Rico’s School of Medicine, and where he is credited with initiating the island’s environmental movement.
