The inscription surrounding the cross, at top, reads “Omnia ab uno natura prima materia,” or, “All arises from one original substance.” The twin vines are labeled, in French, “the fruit of life” and “the fruit of death.” The inscription at the base of the drawing reads, "O / homme / apprens a te / connoitre toi meme / le tresor de toute sagesse / est concentre en toi," or, “Oh, man! Get to know yourself. The treasure of all wisdom is concentrated in you.” In manuscripts like this one, alchemy is formulated as an occult science in which the transformation of base metals into gold serves as a metaphor for the purification of the soul.
