Such campaigns created thousands of jobs for women, and subsequent generations have positioned Rosie as a symbol of late 20th Century empowerment. In fact, this particular image was not used officially, and is sometimes confused with the similar poster by Norman Rockwell, which features a strident young woman standing before the American flag.
