DescriptionOne of the 150 collectable books listed in Taurus and probably limited to 500 copies, if that. Shackleton's piece on Antarctic exploration is four and a half pages in length. He delivered it as an address in 1914 before the London Boys League of which he was president. The league was founded by WHITEHOUSE who was then Parliamentary Secretary to the Chancellor of the Exchequer. In his capacity as Parliamentary Secretary he came into intimate association with Shackleton during the preparations for the Endurance expedition. This book is his humble tribute to NANSEN and Shackleton. In 1919 Whitehouse founded the Bembridge School for boys on the eastern edge of the Isle of Wight and was its warden, which explains the signed bookplate in this copy. In 1935 he formed the committee to preserve the Fram, arguably the most famous polar ship in the world. last great Antarctic sledge journey by the geologist and second-in-command of Adm Byrd's first Antarctic Expedition 1928-30.
