Description: Superb Antique Japanese Carved Burl wood bowl Woman motif signed Noritisugu of the Katsushika district of Edo (Tokyo). She holds a conical rain hat (kasa) and she wears a rain coat (mino). there are 15 kanji words carved on a flattened panel on the left. I have had these translated (see below) Lovely patina from considerable age. The carving is of a very high standard and some more research would most likely reward. Diameter is 320mm (irregular) I would estimate it is circa 1890-1910 but could possibly be older. Condition is excellent there are two small screw holes for a wall mounting. A beautiful piece."日本美術武陽葛飾落合大賀範次Japanese Art Buyō KatsushikaOchiai Ōga(or Taiga) Noritsugu""Buyō is another name of Edo, and Katsushika is the name of a region in Edo/Tokyo....Ochiai is also a location name here, but it can also be a surname.Ōga/Taiga Noritsugu would be the artist's name..." (or possibly the owners name but I feel this less likely) Thank you to Toritoribe for translating the kanji.
