Jerry Lewis (born Joseph Levitch;[a] March 16, 1926 – August 20, 2017) was an American comedian, actor, singer, filmmaker, and humanitarian, dubbed "The King of Comedy". He gained his career breakthrough with singer Dean Martin; they became Martin and Lewis in 1946 and performed together until their acrimonious breakup in 1956. Lewis then pursued a solo career as a performer, actor and filmmaker, starring in sixty feature-length films (including notable hits The Bellboy and The Nutty Professor). He also worked behind-the-scenes as director, producer and screenwriter, appeared in numerous television programs, performed comedy routines on concert stages and in nightclubs and released many album recordings as a singer. Lewis became one of the most popular acts in Las Vegas and is known for his friendship with fellow artists Sammy Davis Jr., Frank Sinatra and Martin. He raised awareness for muscular dystrophy during his fifty-five years with the Muscular Dystrophy Association, most notably through his Labor Day telethon. Lewis helped develop and popularize "video assist", the closed-circuit apparatus enabling film directors to see immediately what they had shot without waiting for developed film footage.
