The back story of these seeds is very interesting.. 33 years ago a Michigan state forester found a small stand of very large American Chestnut trees on/in a state forest near the Au Sable river in Missaukee county, Michigan (South of Kalkaska, MI). This fellow gathered and planted some of the seeds in pots and then gave the seedlings to several of his coworkers in the division of forestry. My friend received 3 of these seedlings and planted them on his 80 acre tree farm about 60-80 miles East of the original wild trees. Fast forward 32 years and this years crop was gang busters. The trees are huge (19" diameter on one of them), have no sign of blight or cankers and have been producing viable seeds for decades. We met many years ago and have shared our passion for bird dogs and forestry ever since, he was amazed when I told him about selling my own Chinkapin chestnut seeds and so I agreed to sell some for him. He has volunteers growing all over this farm now but the deer love them and he is not a youngster so protecting them with fence is not as important as other chores around the farm (see photos). If I may suggest the following for your contemplation; get these in some moist soil as fast as possible and refrigerated, if you plant them outside now then make sure they are well protected from squirrels, mice, and chipmunks, etc. Use 1/4 inch hardware cloth over the bed or pots, you could even double up the layer, and weight down the edges so nothing can crawl under and eat the seeds. They will start sprouting very early spring depending on your climate. I would immediately mulch them with a huge pile of leaves and or straw until spring when the mulch can be removed. You could also keep them in the fridge in moist potting mix and then move them outside in the spring depending on your climate area.
