Colorful Commemorative Baseball Card issued by Carl Aldana #3 - MAURY WILLS ~ 1958-1959 Spokane Indians (PCL) Very Limited Edition FIRST PRINTING of just 50 cards Remember the old Pacific Coast League trading cards - those colorful cards with rounded corners produced by Mother's Cookies back in 1952-53. Well, Carl Aldana has done it once again! He has followed up his attractive 47-card 1950 Sommer & Kaufmann San Francisco Seals set, colorful 73 card set of Seals from the World War II era and 3-card DiMaggio brothers set with many more selected singles, including this one. First Printing This is a first printing offer. Just 50 cards were printed in total. If a subsequent printing is made, there will be distinguishing characteristic(s) so this First Printing will remain special. The card measures 2-1/4" by 3-1/2" - nearly identical to the early 1950s Mother's Cookies cards which were 1/16" narrower at 2-3/16" by 3-1/2". It is numbered and features a Spokane Indians design and checklist printed on the reverse side. Like other Carl Aldana commemorative cards, this one looks magnificent mounted in standard 9-pocket collector pages. ~ About the Subject ~ Maury Wills, one of baseball's great ballplayers of the past half century, spent parts of two seasons at Spokane batting .253 and .313 in 144 and 48 games, respectively, for the 1958 and '59 PCL seasons. Once in the big leagues, Maury became a star from his first full season and after. He was National League stolen base champion 6 straight seasons with an all-time single-season mark of 104 in 1962 - the year he was selected as N.L.'s Most Valuable Player! In his 14-year career Maury Wills hit .281 with 2134 base hits and 586 stolen bases. A 5-time all-star and twice Gold Glove Award winner, Wills received MVP votes 7 other years besides his MVP year. Following his active days, he managed the Seattle Mariners for parts of the 1980-1981 seasons. Like other players of his era, when it came time for consideration for the National Baseball Hall of Fame, Maury got off to a good start with 30.3% support his initial year of eligibility (1978). Unfortunately, as more voters who never saw Wills play gained the BBWAA vote, Maury's percentages actually went down - reaching a low of just 13.8% in his next-to-last year of eligibility. Hopefully, a Committee on Veterans will one day rectify this oversight and Maury Wills will have his plaque at Cooperstown.
