Description: You will receive a packet of 25 Seeds from our Mavuno Cowpeas (Vigna unguiculata) growing in sunny Florida. Home grown naturally using regenerative growing methods with lots of love and zero chemicals, pesticides, or synthetic fertilizers. The seeds are from our most recent harvest and are fresh viable seeds ready to sow. Growing Info & TipsMavuno translates to Harvest in Tanzania where this variety of cowpea is from. I like to grow it as a cover crop mixed into the orchard floor. It functions as living mulch ground cover that suppresses weeds and builds fertility with its biomass while fixing nitrogen back into the soil. The best thing about this Mavuano variety of cowpea is its sprawling growth habit. It is not a climber that takes over adjacent trees. It is however a vigorous grower and a single one can grow upwards of 15ft in Diameter if left un-pruned. It will grow in poor soil and well-amended soil, in full sun to part shade. It is resistant to nematodes, but is susceptible cowpea curculio. Mavuno is a day- sensitive variety, so the pods donโt begin to set until the shorter days of fall. When they do the Pods appear in V-shaped pairs, are rather long (large pods contain as many as 18 seeds) and have cream-colored seeds. For Sowing the Mavuno Cowpea Seeds:Mavuno Cowpea Seeds are best sown after the chance of a frost has passed. Temperatures should be in the 77-95 degree F range for seeds to germinate. Soak seed overnight in water to speed up germination. Sow the seeds ยฝ- 1โ deep in pre-moistened potting mix in small pots. You can also direct sow in the ground but will want to provide some protection against the squirrels. Muvano cowpea seeds can take 7-14 days to germinate to be patient. Keep soil moist but not soggy. If growing in pots, once established you can transplant them, just continue to water until they are happily established in the ground. Taste & Preparation The leaves can be enjoyed boiled or stir-fried. The fresh-shelled peas can be eaten like black eyed peas. The pods are fibrous and inedible to eat like a snap bean. The dried beans can be cooked and enjoyed as you would other dried beans. Shipping of Seeds: I ship these seeds via the Postal Service, USPS, Ground Advantage with tracking.
