It was an institution which for the five glory decades of its supremacy was at once a prestige symbol of glittering magnitude, a household word throughout the civilized world and a triumph of railroading operations with few equals and no superiors. Its sailing lists were the great and powerful of the time and place, the names that made news and were the stuff of Who's Who, Burke's Peerage and The Wall Street Journal. Its regular patrons were the faces one encountered in other settings in the Place Vendome, the Via Mizner in Palm Beach, luncheon at the Ritz in Madison Avenue and in the corridors of The Palace in San Francisco.
