Description: The American Women Quarters program has easily become the most popular circulating coin program since the 50 State Quarters initiative that spanned from 1999 through 2008. Recognizing famous and influential women from across all facets of society, the American Women Quarters launched in January 2022 and commemorates five women each year with designs that pay homage to the lives and legacies of each honoree. The program, slated to last until 2025, kicked off its debut year of 2022 with a quarter remembering poet and activist Maya Angelou, following up in the spring with a tribute to NASA astronaut Sally Ride. The third quarter of 2022 acknowledges Wilma Mankiller, the first female principal chief of the Cherokee Nation. Mankiller, whose surname is a reference to a traditional Cherokee military rank similar to a captain or major, was born on November 18, 1945, in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. She grew up in a home with no electricity or indoor plumbing and in her adolescent years moved with her family to San Francisco, where her father had a job in the industrial sector. Mankiller said the relocation was influenced by the Bureau of Indian Affairs, which persuaded many Native Americans to leave their ancestral lands with the lure of a secure job and life in the big city — a move she referred to as “my own little Trail of Tears.” By the late 1960s, Mankiller had become an activist fighting for the rights of Native Americans, focusing on helping enrich the lives of youth, providing support for tribal groups at risk of losing their lands to development, and advocating for better infrastructure in the Cherokee Nation. She was elected principal chief of the Cherokee Nation in 1985, holding that position for 10 years and overseeing a decline in infant mortality and increase in academic achievement while improving her government’s revenue. She was named the Ms. magazine Woman of the Year in 1987 and entered the National Women’s Hall of Fame in 1993. President Bill Clinton bestowed her with a Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1993. She would spend the rest of her life as an author and philanthropist whose mission was to help her people. She passed away on April 6, 2010, from pancreatic cancer. She was 64. The 2022 Wilma Mankiller Quarter was released on June 14, 2022, and is a regularly circulating coin. The quarter’s reverse design shows Mankiller gazing into the sky with determination as she lays her eyes on the seven-pointed star of the Cherokee Nation. The motif was designed by United States Mint Artistic Infusion Program Designer Benjamin Sowards and sculpted by United States Mint Medallic Artist Phebe Hemphill. The common obverse seen on all American Women Quarters is a bust of President George Washington by Laura Gardin Fraser.
