The semi-evergreen, delicate foliage of most varieties of this hardy plant shows different colors every season—pinkish in the spring, then fresh, light green, then bronzy purple in the fall and bright crimson in winter. Large clusters of creamy or pinkish white blossoms appear in late spring, followed by showy red berries . Cold hardiness zones: 6 - 9 Light needs: Partial to full sun Average landscape size: Moderate grower to 6 to 8 ft. tall, 3 ft. wide. Special features: Deer Resistant, Medicinal use : The roots and stems are antitussive, astringent, febrifuge, stomachic and tonic. A decoction is used in the treatment of fever in influenza, acute bronchitis, whooping cough, indigestion, acute gastro-enteritis, tooth abscess, pain in the bones and muscles and traumatic injuries. It is especially useful in the treatment of children's coughs. A decoction of the leaves is tonic. The fruit is febrifuge and tonic. Edible parts : Young leaves - boiled.
