Description: 19th C. Smoking Buddha Gaudy Welsh Ironstone 4.5” pitcher/creamer Description: Offering a hand painted Gaudy Ironstone small pitcher or large creamer c. 1850-65 in the Smoking Buddha pattern and in the tradition of Gaudy Welsh. Beautifully intact colors: vibrant cobalt, russet, and lots of reflective copper luster. Made in England for the American market. Its ironstone so it is heavier and of a later period than most Gaudy. A major characteristic of Gaudy Welsh is the color palette which consists of cobalt blue, copper lustre and various shades of green, yellow, orange and pink. Russet or burnt orange on Gaudy Welsh ranges from a vibrant hue to a very subtle shading. Cobalt blue as an underglaze color was incorporated over wide surface areas of Gaudy Welsh borders as leaves, panels, vines and stems, for motifs, and as scrolling. Maker’s Mark: none visible Dimensions: 4 ½” high and approximately 6” from tip of spout to handle. Condition: VERY GOOD: Shows minor signs of wear and use commensurate with age but still very attractive. Crazing overall. Darkening below the spout and on part of the base rim. NO chips or cracks.
