Beaded circle around the rim.Diameter: 23 mm iEdge: Plain. The Portuguese Republic of Mozambique existed from 1952 - 1975. The Republic of Mozambique is located in Southeastern Africa. Mozambique borders the Indian Ocean to the east, Tanzania to the north, Malawi and Zambia to the northwest, Zimbabwe to the west, and Swaziland & South Africa to the southwest. Mozambique's first inhabitants were San hunters and gatherers, ancestors of the Khoisani peoples. Between the 1st and 4th centuries AD, waves of Bantu-speaking people migrated through the Zambezi River valley and into the plateau and coastal areas. The Bantu were farmers and ironworkers. When Portuguese Explorers reached Mozambique in 1498, Arab commercial and slave trading settlements existed for several centuries. After World War II, Portugal maintained that Mozambique and other Portuguese possessions were provinces of Portugal, and emigration to the colonies soared. In 1974, a military coup overthrew the Portuguese government, and on June 25, 1975, Mozambique became an independent nation. We are collectors, not professional coin graders.
