First welding in space. In the orbital compartment of the Soyuz-6 spacecraft, a Vulkan installation was mounted, designed for welding in zero gravity in a space vacuum. The Vulkan unit was developed at the Paton Welding Institute in Kiev. During the group flight of three spacecraft Soyuz-6, Soyuz-7 and Soyuz-8, it was planned to dock the Soyuz-7 and Soyuz-8 spacecraft. The Soyuz-6 cosmonauts were supposed to be nearby (about 50 meters away) and filming the docking. However, due to the electronics failure of the Igla automatic docking system, the docking did not take place. The ships were equipped for automatic docking only; manual docking, under the control of astronauts, was impossible. The tests of the Vulkan welding machine were successful. During welding, the cosmonauts were in the spacecraft's descent vehicle, and the orbital compartment was depressurized. The cosmonauts controlled the welding process using instruments installed in the descent vehicle. On October 16 at 09:52:47 UTC, Soyuz-6 successfully landed. The search helicopters arrived at the landing site 10 minutes later, by which time the cosmonauts were already independently getting out of the descent vehicle.
