This is an original press photo. Statue in Art Controversy-This statue of Father Damien, the martyr priest who devoted a lifetime to lepers, has been involved in an art controversy. Hawaii's Governor John A. Burns signed a bill Monday to accept the statue thus ending the controversy but still leaves undecided whether that statue or one of King Kamehameha I, the monarch who unified the Hawaiian Islands, will be the one to be placed in Washington's Statuary Hall. The argument centered on charges of critics that the statue by New York sculptress Marisol Escobar showed the priest in the last stages of leprosy. Actually Father Damien died in 1889 of Hansen's disease. Photo measures 8 x 9.5inches. Photo is dated 05-30-1967.
