A dog's life, barring unforeseen and unavoid- able accidents, can prove to be a pleasant, memorable and rewarding experience for both the pet and his human companions. Whether the dog you share your home with is purebred or mixed breed, he deserves to be properly fed, adequately trained, and carefully groomed. This will help him enjoy maximum health and comfort and, in turn, provide you with optimum pleasure and pride of ownership. No family wants to have an ill-mannered, sickly, or undernourished dog. The responsibility for the rearing of a healthy and happy dog rests solely with you. Your love, your patience, and your care can help make your dog's life a happy one. This booklet deals with some of the basic rules for dog care, including feeding, training, housing, and disease prevention. It will help make your "labor of love" in raising your pet easier and more effective. When problems arise, and when you feel the need for expert help and advice, remember that the man best qualified to assist you is your veterinarian. You can turn to him with confidence, because he is educated and experi- enced in these things and because he likes your dog. What kind of dog should our family get? If you already own a dog, your choice has probably been a happy one. As among proud parents there are no bad children, likewise, among proud pet owners theirs are the best dogs. If, however, you are looking for a pet, a few words of counsel may be in order. It's usually best not to take a Boxer or a Great Dane home to a small city apartment, regardless of your feelings about the breed; also, think twice before you import a Chi- huahua for a spacious suburban home. There is no sight more pathetic than that of a large dog straining at a leash for his inadequate exercise and toilet-run around the block, unless, of course, it's the image of a toy breed or lap dog surrounded by unused fields and streams. Pick a dog to fit the kind of home you live in, a dog that agrees with the kind of life you lead. You will both be the happier for the experience. In addition to size, there are other considerations that may influence your choice of breed. These include the question of long-haired versus short-haired breeds, and whether to get a male or female. Short-haired dogs require less stripping, clipping or plucking and are more easily bathed. Females*, especially spayed ones are less apt to develop wanderlust, and, properly trained, make ideal household pets. Of course, if the man of the family wants to train a hunting or working dog, or if the family wants an outdoor watchdog, your list of selections will be somewhat reduced. Before you make your final choice, carefully study the pages of one or more of the excellent magazines devoted to the breeding and raising of dogs.
