Description: This listing is for a 1st edition, pre-trade printing of "How The Grinch Stole Christmas," dated 1957, with the rare dust jacket. This example pre-dates the Random House trade printing by approximately a month. The book has several Stockton, CA, library stamps, the earliest showing a date of 11/2/1957, so it was printed sometimes in October to allow for shipping. The Random House trade version was printed 11/24/1957 for December distribution. The photos above show that the book was inventoried on 11/2/1957 and removed 18 years later, almost to the day, on November 11/1/1975, with several inventory dates in between. It appears that the library purchased 4 of these at $2.50 each. Rare to have a book's history laid out like this! Another pre-trade indicator is that the book shows 13 other books by Dr. Zeuss, whereas the 1st edition trade printings show 14 books. The book features an illustrated green cloth cover as opposed to the paper litho trade cover. It is in excellent condition overall, including the dust jacket, which is protected by heavy clear plastic. The dust jacket is taped to the cover and was never removed. The cover underneath looks excellent. Pages are surprisingly clean for a library book, showing just a bit of soiling. Binding is tight. If you are looking for the earliest printing of "How The Grinch Stole Christmas," this is it, and a very nice example! On consignment from a lifelong Christmas collector. Thanks for looking!
