Toward the end of WWIl he was able to get some damaged airplane noses that were made of lucite. During that period leather and suede were in scarce supply so this was a perfect solution. He designed a lucite jewelry box and brought it to the buyers of Saks Fifth Avenue New York. They loved it and asked him to add handles and the rest is history! See pictures for details.
