Description: Today's NGC population is a mere 462 with 900 better. Seems like a popular year and mintmark, but why is old George so scarce in mint state examples? Blast white! No spotting! No toning! Clean, very clean, fields and devices, both sides. There's some evidence of a grease-filled mintmark, ....or what else could it be? The "S" looks similar to the old Pillsbury Dough Boy cartoon! Of greater interest is the fact that two styles of mintmark may be found on 1942-S quarters. Both the Trumpet-Tail S & Serif S were used this year.. Perhaps this mint mark is an undiscovered third version, a 'Fat' version? ;) After spending more time with X5+, ... I believe Auld George looks like a Fat 'Trumpet-tail' strike!
