Description: Offering an ORIGINAL 1940 WEDGWOOD RED PLATE commemorating THE "UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA BICENTENNIAL, 1740 TO 1940." PENN is the oldest university in the UNITED STATES, founded in PHILADELPHIA in 1740 by BENJAMIN FRANKLIN and others. The back reads "SPIRE OF IRVINE AUDITORIUM DRAWN BY CLAYTON E. JENKINS '21." The plate depicts the illustrious IRVINE AUDITORIUM completed in 1932 by PHILDELPHIA'S GREAT ARCHITECT HORACE TRUMBUAER with likely assistance from JULIAN ABELE. Image appears to be the NORTHWEST SIDE as viewed from campus. The RIM of the PLATE has a raised LAUREL DECORATION with RAISED VIGNETTES of a bust of FRANKLIN at the top and the UNIVERSITY CREST at the bottom. In 1939, The University commissioned two sets of Wedgwood China to commemorate the BICENTENNIAL of its founding. The WEDGWOOD CHINA COMPANY was selected for this commission partly because this firm had already produced several portraits of BENJAMIN FRANKLIN during his lifetime, including the portrait which appears on each of the dessert cups. One set of plates originally sold for twenty dollars. Like the cups, the plates were white, printed in red with drawings of campus scenes done by alumni of the University. The scene and the artist are identified on the back of each of plate. The PLATE measures approximately 10.3" in diameter, and weighs approximately 22 ounces. The back is marked "WEDGWOOD ETRURIA, ENGLAND; SOLE IMPORTERS: JONES MCDUFFEE & STRATTON, BOSTON," and impressed "WEDGWOOD" and other marks.
