Фотосерия подготовлена по материалам Государственного литературного музея и библиотеки Музея В.В. Маяковского в период, когда возродился интерес к поэту и его творчество было признано «государственно значимым явлением». После смерти Владимира Маяковского в 1930 году о нём будто бы забыли. В феврале 1935 года Лиля Брик писала в письме к Сталину: «»Полное собрание сочинений» вышло только наполовину… Уже больше года ведутся разговоры об однотомнике. Матерьял давно сдан, а книга даже ещё не набрана. Детские книги не переиздаются совсем. Книг Маяковского в магазинах нет. Купить невозможно…». Обращение возымело действие, и после резолюции Сталина «безразличие к его памяти и его произведениям – преступление», дело сдвинулось с мёртвой точки, но в актуальном для своего времени социалистическом направлении. Как поэт-футурист и экспериментатор в СССР Маяковский не воспринимался. Фотосерию подготовили научные сотрудники Литературного музея Артемий Бромберг и Виктор Дувакин. Артемий Григорьевич Бромберг (1903–1966) – основатель «Бригады Маяковского» – общества по изучению и пропаганде творчества поэта, организованной в феврале 1930 года на последней выставке поэта «20 лет работы»; возглавлял бригаду в течение двадцати лет. Дувакин Виктор Дмитриевич (1909–1982), участник «Бригады Маяковского» в 1931–1941 гг.; известен как инициатор стенографии и фонозаписи воспоминаний о Маяковском и его окружении. На филологическом факультете МГУ руководил семинаром по Маяковскому и поэзии ХХ века.
