Description: The Buffalo nickel, officially known as the Indian Head nickel, was introduced in 1913 by the United States Mint. It was designed by sculptor James Earle Fraser and features a Native American profile on the obverse (front) and an American bison (often referred to as a buffalo) on the reverse (back). The design was considered groundbreaking for its time, as it departed from the typical allegorical motifs seen on previous U.S. coinage and instead depicted iconic American images. However, the original design faced challenges due to the high relief of the images, which caused premature wear and made it difficult to strike the coins properly. In 1913, the Type 1 Buffalo nickel featured the buffalo standing on a mound, but due to issues with the denomination not being clearly visible, the design was modified in 1913 to feature the buffalo standing on a flat ground (Type 2). The coin underwent further modifications over the years to address issues such as wear and die breakage. Production of the Buffalo nickel continued until 1938, when it was replaced by the Jefferson nickel. Despite its relatively short mintage period, the Buffalo nickel remains a popular and iconic series among collectors today, admired for its unique design and historical significance.
