Description: The Home of the Blizzard: Being the Story of the Australasian Antarctic Expedition, 1911-14 Sir Douglas Mawson 1930 Hodder and Stoughton : London 9" by 6" xxx, [2], 438pp. The second abridged popular edition of Mawson's survey of the 1911-14 Australasian Antarctic Expedition, a bright copy. Early Edition,Illustrated, Publishers' Original Binding The second printing of the abridged popular edition. Illustrated with ninety-two photographs, eighteen diagrams, and three folding maps. Collated, complete. Detailed account of the Australasian Antarctic Expedition of 1911-14, which explored largely uncharted areas of the Antarctic coast due south of Australia. Scientifically, the expedition resulted in important reports in meteorological measurements, magnetic observation, and oceanographic programs - as well as a collection of biological and geological samples (that included the first meteorite found in Antarctica). Despite its success in many fields, it was also marked by the death of two members during an attempt to reach Oates Land. Their deaths forced Mawson to travel alone for over a month to return to the expedition's main base. Led by Sir Douglas Mawson, Australian geologist and explorer, he is known as one of the key expedition leaders during the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration.
