Featuring three beautiful illustrated plates. Appears complete. As the title suggests, the common element linking all three separate legends is the crucifix - a cross with the crucified Jesus Christ. A common feature is also the fate of the main characters, and their battle with their conscience and faith. What differs is the underlying themes of ethnic background, religion, and social status. Each legend shows the different ways people put their faith in God. Zeyer's prose and poems are restless, nostalgic, mystical, depressive, and usually end tragically. His novels describe characters trying to live a better life under the romantic ideals, and people who find peace only at the moment of death.
