Spine is taped at tail. Both hinges on spine are split, binding mesh exposed. Boards exhibit scuffing to edges and corners are rubbed to the boards. Colored marbling is lightly soiled, but still bright. Previous ownership signature on front pastedown. Inscription from the editor on front end-page: To A & W Kead, from the editor, R.K. Wood. Front gutter split at half-title page, binding mesh exposed. Light toning throughout textblock. No known marginalia. Binding tight and intact. Please see photos. Matthew Green (1696-1737) was a British poet born of Nonconformist parents. The few anecdotes that have been preserved show him to have been as witty as his poems would lead one to expect. The Spleen was originally printed in 1737 with a preface by his friend Richard Glover. The Spleen, which was not originally intended for publication, is an epistle to Cuthbert Jackson, advocating cheerfulness, exercise and a quiet content as remedies. It is full of witty sayings. Despite praise for The Speen, Green is thought of as a "one-poem" poet, to the point he became known as "Spleen-Green." FORN-MSB-0623-0716-HK240
