It is the tale of Martin, a young boy who walks a bit farther from his house each day until he reaches a mystical land full of talkative animals, friendly gnomes, and mist people. This copy was printed in 1924, a second printing to the 1920 edition, illustrated by the brilliant Dorothy Lathrop. William Henry Hudson (1841-1922) was an Anglo-Argentine naturalist, author, and ornithologist. He was one of the founding members of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, and is best known for his novel "Green Mansions" (1904). He is considered a national treasure in Argentina, and his legacy lives on in the form of an Italian town and numerous other public places named after him. Dorothy Pulis Lathrop (1891–1980) was an American writer and illustrator of children's books. During a prolific career spanning from 1919 to 1967, she used her artistic skills as an illustrator of other authors’ children's fictional literature: more than 38 books were published with her illustrations. Lathrop wrote and illustrated 9 children's books and several topical nonfiction books. She was also an accomplished printmaker. Much of her work was devoted to the beauty and importance of animals. This is a lovely copy of this very charming story, that would still capture the imaginations of children and adults alike. Dorothy Lathrop's fascinating illustrations alone would make this worth the purchase! It would make a very unique gift or a wonderful addition to any collection.
