Description: Issued to British pilots in WWI, this scarce 1918 Confidential manual is not a reprint. The book was declared for "Official Use Only", "Not to be Carried in Aircraft". This book was used to help pilots recognize their own British aircraft as opposed to the enemy's in difficult situations. It was produced for the use of the Royal Flying Corps and RAF in 1918. The content consists of multiple views of each plane in silhouette and in photographs, as well as a description of aircraft recognition details such as rigging, specifications, engines, insignia, markings. Most of the best-known aircraft of the time are included: the Sopwith Camel, Triplane, Dolphin, and Snipe, the Avro 504k, B.E.2., S.E.5, Bristol Scout, Martinsyde Scout, Armstrong Whitworth FK, Vickers FB9, RE 8, Bristol Fighter, Spad, Handley Page bomber, D.H. 9, and more. The full list is shown in one of the photographs. This copy was well used. Text is complete but shows use. No stains or intentional folds, but pages have bumped corners. The text block has separated from the covers. The binding is intact but fragile. The covers have fading and rubbing, tears along the spine edge, light soil on the rear side, bumps to tips.
