Picture Out Of Our Past - What does a little town do when the nearby levee breaks and the river rudely invites itself on to Main Street? The townspeople of Tallulah, Louisiana got such a damp visitation when the Mississippi flowed through a broken embankment near Mounds, Louisiana, around 1910. But they kept their heads above water via skiffs, and made the best of the newly-formed Venetian aisles. The photo's contributor, Thelma J. Unsworth of Metairie was eight at the time of the flood. She recalls how "the boats using the train tracks as a dock) would row you over to your mail box" at the Post Office across the street, uh, the canal.
