Description: This button produced by Hassan cigarettes, a very popular brand at the beginning of the 1900's. These were produced around 1910, and came free with the cigarettes. The buttons are lithographed images with a celluloid cover. Most have the paper insert from the particular brands of cigarette inside the pin's back. These buttons feature the art of the popular newspapers cartoonists at the dawning of the America's comics page. The button's artist's are the icons who's innovations lead the way to the comics we know today. This lot features the artwork of Tom McNamara.Tom McNamara was a newspaper cartoonist and an artist for early comic books. He was born in San Francisco, California, and studied at the Mark Hopkins Art Institute. He began his career as an illustrator for the Chronicle from San Francisco at the turn of the century. McNamara's comic strip 'Us Boys' was published through the International Feature Service from 1910 to 1928. In the 1920s, he was based in Hollywood and worked as a writer for the 'Our Gang' series by Hal E. Roach Studios and as a director of Mary Pickford in 'Little Annie Rooney' and 'Sparrows', among other things. He also did Sunday comics like 'Teddy Jack and Mary' and 'On Our Block' in the late 1920s and early 1930s. Tom McNamara has done artwork for humorous cigarette pins, that were given away with packs of cigarettes in the 1910s through the 1930s. These pinbacks are for collectors of Vintage Tobacciana and Cartoon ephemera and anyone who likes vintage cool that's well made. I will carefully package this pin so it arrives in the condition shown. Any questions? Need more photos? Feel free to contact me through eBay. Thanks for looking and please check out my store! Keeth.
